Services and studies

East Columbus United Methodist — Sunday events begin at 9 a.m. at East Columbus United Methodist Church at 2439 Indiana Ave. in Columbus, with fellowship time in the foyer with beverages and snacks. Worship begins at 9:30 a.m.

Sunday School begins at 10:40 a.m. for all ages and Bible interests.

First Presbyterian — The church begins the year with their traditional “Star Sunday.” Each will receive a paper star with a word written on it in worship which may be a “guiding star” in 2020. The day will include the sacrament of communion, the ordination and installation of new elders and deacons, and the leadership of the Sanctuary Choir.

Since the Gospel for the day (Mark 1:21-45) includes several stories of healing, anointing with oil will be offered for anyone who desires that prayerful blessing. The sermon will be “Participating in Healing.” Worship begins at 9:30 a.m., 512 Seventh Street, Columbus.

Infant and toddler care is available 9:15 a.m. to noon. The men’s and women’s support groups meet on Fridays at 7 a.m., and a second men’s support group (working age men) meets every Monday at 6:15 a.m.

People in the community in need of a meal are invited to Hot Meals offered Fridays at 5 p.m. (please enter through the glass doors on Franklin).

The church is a LGBTQ-friendly church, open and affirming to all.

First United Methodist — On Sunday at the 9:00 a.m. Traditional Service and 11:00 a.m. The Table, the Rev. Howard Boles will deliver the message, “It Begins with a Story” at the church, 618 Eighth Street, Columbus.

The scripture will be John 1:10-18. Sunday School for all ages begins at 10:10 a.m. Childcare is available during the service.

Flintwood Wesleyan — The church is located at 5300 E. 25th St.

Sunday evenings Celebrate Recovery begins with a meal at 5:25 p.m in The Friendship Center and the meeting starts at 6 p.m. upstairs in Curry Hall. The public is invited to attend.

Connections, a ladies’ study group, led by Pastor Teri Jones, meets the second and fourth Monday of each month at 10 a.m. in The Friendship Center.

In the Beginning, a small group Bible Study, will not meet again until 6 p.m. Jan. 14. The group will start meeting in the basement of the church and is studying the book of Genesis. You can start at any point so new members are welcome to join.

Wednesday activities begins are postponed until Jan. 8.

On Thursday, Cub Scout Pack 588 will meet when events are scheduled and Boy Scout Troop 588 will meet at 7 p.m.

Garden City Church of Christ — Starting Jan. 5 at the 10 a.m. service, Garden City Church of Christ is hosting a four-week sermon series called “Reset.”

Everyone in the community is invited to attend.

The topics of the series include “Reset My Heart,” “Reset My Mind,” “Reset My Voice,” and “Reset My Hands.”

Grace Lutheran — Pastor John Armstrong will preach on Sunday. Worship is at 8 and 10:30 a.m., with Sunday School for all ages at 9:30 a.m.

Old Union United Church of Christ — Scriptures for the 10 a.m. Sunday service will include Isaiah 63:7-9, Psalm 148, and Matthew 2:13-23. The message will be “And a Baby Stirred Things Up!”

Sunday school will be at 9 a.m. with fellowship at 9:40 a.m.

Petersville United Methodist Church — The Rev. Stormy Scherer-Berry will give her message, “Follow Your Star,” at the 9 a.m. worship service on Sunday morning at the church, 2781 North County Road 500E, Columbus. The focus for the next several weeks will be to answer the question, “Who are you?” This Sunday’s theme will be “What paths is God shining light upon for you?”

Scriptures from Isaiah 60 and Matthew 2 will be shared by liturgist Patsy Harris. The children’s sermon will be given by Teresa Covert. A time of fellowship will follow the service.

Prior to worship service, the United Methodist Men will meet at 7:15 a.m. in the fellowship hall. Don Harris will lead the business session, and Larry Nolting will lead the book study.

The Baker’s Dozen Bible study group will meet at the home of Larry and Connie Nolting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday; the Journey Bible study group will meet at the home of Chris Kimerling, also on Monday at 6:30 p.m. The Sit and Stitch group will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Nolting home. All three groups welcome new members.

Choir practice is Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and Prayer Time is at 10 a.m. on Thursday morning at the church led by Barb Hedrick.

On January 11, a Planning Session for 2020 will be held at Old National Bank from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, with Kathy Bush serving as leader.

St. Paul Lutheran — Pastor Doug Bauman will deliver the message, “The Light Has Come” based on Isaiah 60:1-6 at the 8 & 10:45am at Communion services Sunday at St Paul Lutheran Church, 6045 E. State St., Columbus.

Christian education classes for all ages will be held at 9:30 a.m. The Spanish worship service of Lessons and Carols begins at 2:30 p.m. in the church.

Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbus — On Sunday at 10 a.m., Marion Dobbs will present “A Magical New Year” — a service inspired by a pagan ritual.

The discussion will cover stories and deities from Greek and Norse mythology, and a talk on symbolism and setting intentions for the year to come.

Westside Community — Pastor Dennis Aud will lead the service at 10 a.m. Sunday at the church at the corner of West State Road 46 and Tipton Lakes Boulevard.

The children’s program for birth through sixth grade meets at the same time as the 10 a.m. worship service.

The church will be having an Epiphany celebration starting at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. All are welcome to participate for a brief devotion, observance of Epiphany and a fellowship meal following the service.

Events

North Christian Church — In memory of former North Christian Church members Caroline and David Smith, the church is carrying on the Disciples Women’s Ministry holiday tradition of sending funds to the Church World Service Blanket Ministry, a mission to provide blankets to people in poverty or who’ve experienced displacement or disaster.

First United Methodist — Tuesday evenings from Jan. 7 to Feb. 25, the church will host a grief support group. Meetings will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The group will explore grief using Julie Yarbrough’s book, “Beyond the Broken Heart: A Journey Through Grief.” It will take place in the Blue Room (Room 216) at the church, and is open to anyone. To register, or for more information, call the church office at 812-372-2851.

On Friday, January 17 at 7:00 p.m., the church will host a concert featuring Stephanie Pestana on piano. She will showcase works from Chopin, Brahms, Gershwin, Mozart, and more. Admission is free, and donations are encouraged.

On Jan. 20, the church will host the seventh annual First Cares event. From 9 a.m. until noon, volunteers will do work in and for the community. There will be opportunities to help church members stuff homemade animal pillows and tying blankets, or help clean at the Turning Point shelter. Anyone is welcome to help during this morning of service.

On Friday, January 24, at 7:00 p.m., the church will host the Laura Andrews String Studio Recital. Come and hear the young stars of tomorrow! Admission is free, and donations are encouraged.

On Jan. 26, the church will host its first Life Planning Seminar. Possible topics include end-of-life planning, assisted living and funeral planning, and financial planning topics like retirement and college planning. There will be a dinner at 5:15 p.m. with the session to follow at 6 p.m. Anyone in the community is welcome to attend.

St. Paul Lutheran — A grief support Bible study entitled, “Hope When Your Heart Breaks” will begin at 2 p.m. Jan 6 in the church’s Conference Room. Those learning to live without a loved one are welcome.
