It was understandable for the Columbus East gymnastics team to have a little bit of nerves going into its first meet of the season against Seymour on Saturday.
Whatever nerves the Olympians had, they shook it off quickly.
Led by all-around winner Taylen Lane, East had little trouble knocking off Seymour 102.25-96.7.
“I was really happy with how I did,” Lane said. “We can always get better, but for the first time because we were all pretty nervous, I thought we did really good.”

Lane led the all-around with a 33.95. Reagan Mount and Elise LaSell provided strong backup for the Olympians. Mount finished second in the all-around with a score of 33.55, and LaSell finished third with a 33.40.
On the vault, Mount tied for first with Seymour’s Marlo Cornn with a score of 8.65. LaSell scored an 8.6 to finish in third.
On the bars, East’s Makyna Mullins won with a score of 8.75. Lane finished second with 8.1, and Mount was third with an 8.0.
East then swept the top four spots on the beam and the floor. On beam, Mount and Lane tied for first at 8.5, followed by Mullins with an 8.4 and LaSell with an 8.15.
On the floor, Lane led the way with an 8.95, followed by LaSell with an 8.8. Mullins and Mount were right behind with scores of 8.6 and 8.4, respectively.
“We were nervous, but we were good. We obviously have a lot of improvement to make, but it’s the first meet and you have to get it over with sooner or later,” East coach Nancy Kirshman said. “I thought, overall, we did OK. Overall, we did all right, but much room for improvement, and that’s why the first meet is the first meet. We can move on, and make some improvement on scores and figure out what we did wrong.”
The Olympians will have plenty of time to fix those mistakes before they host crosstown rival Columbus North at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 13.
