Letter to editor: Park Board coverage ‘smacks of sensationalism’

From: Brad Gonsalves

Columbus

What is the relevancy of continuing to mention, typically within the first paragraph of each story on the topic, that the property purchased earlier this year by the Columbus Park Board was owned by the aunt of the mayor of Columbus? Then, mentioning that the mayor had recused himself from any discussion on the topic, is not financially involved, and that he referred questions to the park department.

To a casual reader, the wording smacks of sensationalism, trying to perhaps connect some dots that clearly should not be connected.

I understand the relevancy of concerns about possible contamination on the site, but do not understand why the mayor’s name has to be continually associated with the topic. This reader feels that our mayor is working hard to improve an already good place to live and do business, and continuing to have his name associated with stories about the property is unfair to him for the reasons stated above.
