From: Kelly Daugherty, Executive Director, Love Chapel
Columbus
Recently, Love Chapel issued a plea for donations to meet the needs we have experienced at the Food Pantry, Brighter Days Shelter, and with the Financial Assistance program. All areas of service have skyrocketed tremendously during 2019 and these unprecedented needs caused a shortfall of nearly $75,000. The response has been overwhelming and the generosity of Columbus and its churches, citizens and businesses has been an outpouring of love for those that are in need. While final figures won’t be available for another two weeks, the deficit for 2019 has been erased. Thank you.
So often we focus on the unprecedented needs we face and it can seem overwhelming. At times, Brighter Days has been at capacity, we continue to see increased need at the pantry — nearly 7% of the county’s population comes to the Food Pantry every month. Attendance at all Hot Meal sites has been way up, and requests for financial assistance are on the rise. But the opposite of focusing on the needs is focusing on the generosity. I am continually amazed at the numbers of people who are served through Love Chapel, and that the food and monetary donations that are made are able to cover those needs. Unprecedented generosity. Thank you, Columbus.
As we move into 2020, we can likely ascertain that the needs won’t subside. Housing is a real issue which has to be tackled by our local leaders — Columbus lacks affordable housing options and that results in homelessness, or families on the verge of homelessness that need other assistance to stay in their homes. The separation of those that have and those that do not have continues to be a struggle — this issue has to be solved in America or our country is in for real trouble.
And lastly, we have to have a safety net for those who meet troubles. Columbus is blessed by many fine agencies. Love Chapel is just one of the many which meet the basic needs of our citizens facing tough times. So, in 2020, what can you do to support those facing tough times? The Christmas season is always a time when generosity is up and the kindness and caring of our community is spotlighted. But the needs continue throughout the year.
Consider volunteering at one of Love Chapel’s programs, or pick another not-for-profit agency to help out at. Giving of your time throughout the year will bless you, will bless others in need and will bless the agency you select to serve at. Consider a year-round donation to the agency of your choice, or find ways to develop a team to serve. All are great ways to give back if you are one of the lucky ones to have a little extra to give. Thank you to everyone who supported Love Chapel in 2019 to meet the needs of our community, and we look forward to working with you in 2020.
