One dead, one seriously injured in early morning accident

A local teen was killed and another unidentified person was seriously injured after a one-vehicle accident on State Road 46 between Newbern and Hartsville early Tuesday morning.

Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies said accident reconstructionists were at the scene of the accident most of the day Tuesday. The crash was reported at 1:37 a.m. in the 17000 block of East State Road 46, investigators said.

Bartholomew County Coroner Clayton Nolting pronounced 18-year-old Ethan Matthew Nielsen dead at the scene. He said the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head and neck.

When deputies arrived, they found one vehicle inverted on its top in the yard of a home along State Road 46, investigators said.

Two individuals, one of them Nielsen, were found away from the vehicle and both were believed to have been ejected from the vehicle during the crash, deputies said.

A homeowner in the area was performing CPR on one of the two individuals when deputies arrived.

Further life-saving attempts were made by first responders but Nielsen was pronounced dead at the scene by Nolting.

The other individual, whose name has not been released by the sheriff’s department, was flown by Stat Flight medical helicopter to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis with what were described as serious injuries.
