GOODBYE TO ‘GOOD PLACE’; ‘EVIL’ WILL RETURN

“The Good Place” (8:30 p.m., NBC, TV-PG) wraps up its fourth and final season with an hourlong helping. For those who haven’t been following, this talky series takes place in a version of the afterlife that looks very much like a parklike corporate complex.

The characters have had their memories and identities rebooted any number of times, all the while maintaining essential individual characteristics and a sense of camaraderie.

Despite its early departure, “Evil” (10 p.m., CBS, TV-14) will return for a second season. One of a handful of new network series worth thinking about this season, “Evil” does a nice job of blending a foreboding gothic atmosphere, a procedural-of-the-week format and a tug-of-war between faith and scepticism.

Dutch actress Katja Herbers brings a cool intelligence to her role as psychologist Kristen Bouchard, often called upon to confront evidence of demons and possession. Mike Colter stars as her partner, David Acosta, a brooding journalist turned seminarian. Don’t go confusing him with the “hot priest” from “Fleabag,” but there’s no denying a certain friction between these two. Look for “Daily Show” veteran Aasif Mandvi as the science-defending “tech guy” on this ghostbuster team.

— Netflix begins streaming the U.K. miniseries “The Stranger,” an adaptation of a novel by Harlan Coben about a marriage that dissolves when secrets emerge from an unknown source. Look for Jennifer Saunders (“Absolutely Fabulous”) in a dramatic role.

In an acting tour-de-force, Hardy is the only performer seen on screen as his story unfolds (and his life unravels) in a series of phone calls over the course of a 90-minute drive to the maternity ward.
