Gary E. McBride, 83, of Columbus passed from this life at 12:50 p.m. Sunday, February 2, 2020 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. Mr. McBride was born November 23, 1936, in Huntingburg, Indiana, the son of Clarence and Vada Noel McBride.

Gary married Velma Pauline Everroad March 26, 1961.

He was a member of Westside Community Church. He graduated from Freedom High School in 1954, Indiana State University in 1958 and received his Master of Science Degree from Indiana University in 1961.

Mr. McBride retired from the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation after 37 years of service.

From 1958 to 1961 math teacher and 7th grade basketball coach at Central Jr. High, 1961 to 1966 8th grade basketball coach at Northside Jr. High, 1961 to 1969 math teacher at Northside Jr. High, 1963 to 1969 Chairman of the math department at Northside Jr. High, 1966 to 1968 9th grade basketball coach at Northside Jr. High, 1969 to 1975 Dean of boys at Northside Jr. High, 1975 to 1977 Guidance Director at Northside Jr. High, 1977 to 1982 Assistant Principal at Southside Jr. High, 1982 to 1987 Assistant Principal at Northside Middle School and 1987 to 1995 Principal at Northside Middle School.

He was a former member of Phi Delta Kappa, life member NEA, National Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, The Indiana Middle Level Education Association, Past Board member of The Indiana Middle School, Level Education Association, National Association of Secondary School Principals, National Middle School Association, Board of Directors at the Senior Center and Board of Director at the Tipton Lakes Community Association.

During his tenure as principal, he introduced the following programs, Interdisciplinary team teaching, parent newsletters and calendars, parent advisory council, teacher advisory council, top gainers club for students grade improvement, supervised the addition of Northside Middle School and closing of Northside campus, advisee program, club program, sixth grade orientation open house, student of month program and implementation of Modern Red Schoolhouse.

He was the recipient of the Sagamore of The Wabash in 1995, Education Hall of Fame in 1996 presented by Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation.

Hall of Fame inscription reads: Gary Edward McBride, a motivator of students, and one who displays a genuine concern for children, Gary will always be remembered by those who were influenced, guided, and touched by his unselfish dedication to education.

He enjoyed fishing, golf, reading and traveling to Florida and The Tetons.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years; sister, Barbara Stickles of Brazil; sisters-in-law, Elaine McBride of Spencer, Shirley Everroad of Columbus and Phyllis Everroad of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews and many students that he made a difference in their lives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Fred McBride, and David McBride.

The funeral will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Westside Community Church with Pastor Dennis W. Aud officiating.

Family and friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and 10:00 a.m. time of service Thursday at Westside Community Church.

Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
