Staff Report

Professor and author Alex S. Vitale will discuss the topic of “policing” in the United States from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Summerville Room on the IUPUC campus at the Columbus Learning Center.

Vitale has spent the last 25 years writing about policing, and consulting both police departments and human rights organizations internationally. The event is free and open to the public.

His book, “The End of Policing,” attempts to spark public discussion by revealing the tainted origins of modern policing as a tool of social control.

The book shows how the expansion of police authority is inconsistent with community empowerment, social justice — even public safety, according to promotional materials about the talk.

Drawing on groundbreaking research from across the world, and covering virtually every area in the increasingly broad range of police work, Alex Vitale demonstrates in the book how law enforcement has come to exacerbate the very problems it is supposed to solve.

Vitale is a professor of sociology and coordinator of the Policing and Social Justice Project at Brooklyn College, and visiting professor at London Southbank University. He is also a frequent essayist, whose writings have appeared in “The New York Times,” “New York Daily News,” “The Nation,” and “USA Today.”

The event is sponsored by the IUPUC Division of Liberal Arts and the African American Fund of Bartholomew County.

The African American Fund of Bartholomew County was established in 2013 by the Heritage Fund– The Community Foundation of Bartholomew County. Its purpose is to help educate and inspire African Americans who reside in Bartholomew County by focusing on education, leadership development, economic and career development, health awareness and arts and cultural events.
