Officials warn of possible flash flood due to dam failure

Circled area shows the dam that is showing seepage and possibility of failure, according to the state after an inspection.

Bartholomew County Emergency Management has issued a flash flood watch in effect through Saturday afternoon for a group of homes downstream from the Lamberson/Staller Lake Dam in the southwestern part of the county.

County officials have been made aware of seepage in the dam, which is privately owned and located on County Road 225S just west of County Road 550W, said Shannan Hinton, Bartholomew County Emergency Management director.

Between eight and 20 homes downstream of the lake could be impacted if the earthen dam fails, she said.

“We were notified by (the Indiana Department of Natural Resources), who had been notified by a contractor that did an assessment on (the dam) yesterday,” Hinton said.

The Lamberson/Staller Lake Dam is not a state-regulated dam, she said.

“People in this area should monitor the situation closely and be prepared to evacuate in the event of a dam failure. A flash flood warning will be issued if dam failure becomes imminent or occurs,” Bartholomew County Emergency Management said in an alert.
