Icemen senior wins Guitard Memorial Award

The Columbus Icemen’s Tom Sullivan was one of four senior hockey players from around the state presented with the J Howard Guitard Memorial Award at last weekend’s State Invitational Tournament.

The awards are based on academic achievement, community and school contributions, leadership, dedication and sportsmanship. The J Howard Guitard award was established in 1983 to honor Howard Guitard, who helped establish the hockey program in Columbus.

Sullivan received the $1,000 scholarship, an individual plaque and his name on a trophy that will be displayed at the State Invitational Tournament each year.

In the tournament, the Icemen lost to South Bend Riley 3-1 and the South Stars Red 4-1. Brayson Bennett netted one goal and one assist, John Ferguson scored one goal and Evan Federle and Wil Tearman each had one assist. Evan Kuzman was in net one game and had a save percentage of 86.96, and Jacob McMullen was in net one game and had a save percentage of 88.24.

Mites host jamborees

The Columbus Mites hosted a two home jamborees last weekend, fielding three teams. The Mites played friendly games against eight other organizations from Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.

Participants included Avery Orgass, Bentley Hampton, Blake Schneider, Brody Brubaker, Carsen Sims, Carter Harris, Cayden Long, Chance Mathis, Clare Neff, Colton Pepmeier, Daniel Wallace, Duncan Saner, Eli Dykstra, Hallie Mudd, Hiromu Udo, Jack Sargent, Jonah Oliphant, Keaton Grube, Knox Coen, Logan Barringer, Luis Taqueushi, Lukas Jozsa, Luke Getchell, Max Perez, Nolan Sparkman, Oliver Jamerson, Robby Orgass, Thomas Degner, Thomas King and Trent Boone.

BROOMBALL

Championship game set

Toyota Tsunamis and CCA will play for the championship of the Columbus Broomball League after pulling upsets in last weekend’s semifinals.

The No. 3 seed Tsunamis beat No. 2 Vagabonds 3-1. Dalton McNealy, Tyler Houchin and Matt Street scored for Tsunamis. Shawn Bauman had the goal for Vagabonds.

No. 4 CCA edged No. 1 Monsters of Rock 2-1 in overtime. Maxx Warr and Dave Dickinson scored for CCA. Ben Eckhart had the goal for Monsters.

Also last week, No. 6 Hansons blanked No. 7 JenningsCounty BC 2-0 on goals from Erik Spilling and Dave VanValkenburg. Hansons will play No. 5 Our Name Is Earl in the consolation final at 4:30 p.m. today.

Monsters and Vagabonds will play in the third-place game at 5:30 p.m. today. CCA and Tsunamis will meet for the title at 6:30 p.m.

WRESTLING

Panthers finish fourth

Jennings County Middle School finished fourth last weekend in Madison’s Bear Rumble.

Tyler Marksberry (95 pounds), Jonah Mathews (120), Peyton Wilds (135) and Derrek Hawkins (275) all finished second for the Panthers. Zac King (85), Lane Kirchner (100), Brathen Malone (110), Rj Barberis (130) and Robin Stayton (165) all took third; and Eugene Tascott (220) was fourth.

Stayton had the fastest pin of the tournament in 9 seconds.

Meanwhile, in South Dearborn’s open tournament, Kieser Deager won the 200-pound class. Jeremy Jackson (110) and Noah Lawver (130) each finished second.
