First Presbyterian Church is presenting an interactive workshop “Next Steps for Racial Justice,” feature The Rev Denise Anderson as keynote speaker.

The workshop will be from 6 to 8 p.m. April 4 at First Presbyterian, 512 Seventh St. It is part of “BE: An Event Series.”

The theme of the event is next steps for racial justice, with discussion focusing on how to partner with communities, how to break down the silos that divide community members and how community residents can step into a role as a leader.

Child care will be available and a light meal will be served. The event is a free community event welcoming people of all faith backgrounds.

Anderson is a Presbyterian pastor, writer and activist, church officials said. She serves as the Coordinator for Racial and Intercultural Justice at the Presbyterian Mission Agency and as pastor of Unity Presbyterian Church in Temple Hills, Maryland.

In 2016, Anderson and the Rev. Jan Edmiston became the first co-moderators of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the denomination’s history.

“BE: An Event Series” is being offered by the church as a way to explore spirituality and activism, said Leah Jackman-Wheitner, co-leader of the organizing committee. First Presbyterian received a grant from the Center for Congregations in Indianapolis to engage milennials and other community members. To do this, the church came up with the concept of an experiential workshop series touching on topics relevant to young adults in the community, she said.

The series organizers are inviting nationally-recognized speakers to share their passion and missions in life in the workshops.

“One of the things I am most excited about is creating community where we each learn and grow together,” said the Rev. Felipe Martinez, First Presbyterian’s pastor.
