Solar initiative hosts workshop

The Columbus Community Solar Initiative is sponsoring a free workshop this month to help community members learn more about solar power and how it could help them save on their energy bills.

The workshop will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, in the Bartholomew County Public Library conference room.

Those who attend will hear explanations about how solar equipment works and available options, as well as detail costs and benefits, according to organizers.

They will also have the option of registering for an estimate from the organization’s solar vendor partner, organizers said.

Members of the initiative are urging home and business owners to invest in solar power systems this year because the federal Solar Investment Tax Credit has already started to decline. The credit, which was at 30% last year, dropped to 26% for projects beginning this year. For those who wait until 2021 to add solar power, the credit will drop to 22%.

A project of the local Sierra Club chapter and Energy Matters Community Coalition, the Columbus Community Solar Initiative has no financial interest in the solar projects, according to organizers.

Instead, the nonprofit group of volunteers works to leverage the buying power of many home and business owners to achieve more affordable prices and terms.

In addition, the organization provides evaluations of solar power vendors in terms of customer satisfaction, track record, quality product and price.

To date, there are 34 solar projects that the initiative has helped make possible that include 30 residents, two nonprofits, one church and one business.
