Cummins Inc. has started limited production at some of its facilities in the province at the heart of China’s coronavirus outbreak after they were placed on an extended shutdown as part of the country’s effort to combat the spread of the illness.

The Columbus-based company has received approval from Chinese authorities and started limited production Wednesday at two facilities in the city of Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province and the epicenter of the global outbreak of coronavirus, said company spokesman Jon Mills.

Two other Cummins facilities in Wuhan are pending Chinese government approval to start limited production, and two other Cummins facilities in Hubei Province had previously resumed limited production in late February, Mills said. Cummins has 10 facilities in Hubei Province, company officials said.

“A couple of the sites have been approved for limited production, a couple are still pending,” Mills said. “Full production is not permitted until March 21 at this point.”
