Cummins Inc. has announced that employees in southern Indiana with the option of working remotely are being asked to work from home.
Cummins’ hourly production workers who need to be physically present to do their jobs, such as workers in manufacturing facilities, will continue to do so, with the understanding that the company is doing every measure possible to ensure their safety in regards to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, said Jon Mills, Cummins spokesman.
While employees are being given some time to access their work materials from local facilities, some of the Cummins’ offices will have limited access as part of this change.
Mills said the change will be in effect until April 6, when circumstances will be re-evaluated.
It is unknown how many Cummins’ employees will be working from home, but Mills said Cummins has 10,000 employees in Indiana, and the number could easily be in the thousands.
Mills said Cummins leadership is continuing to work on decisions about its workforce 24/7 and leaders are making decisions based on how things are evolving and changing each day.
“There’s a lot more decisions that need to be made and we’re working on that,” he said. “We want to create the best work environment that we can under these circumstances and we recognize the challenges that this is creating for our employees.”
