Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. students’ meals with both breakfast and lunch items will be served beginning Monday in to-go boxes at a range of pickup sites across Columbus and Bartholomew County.
The idea is to minimize person-to-person interaction, according to organizers.
The free meals for thousands of students set for home-based eLearning in grades kindergarten through 12 will be available through the currently scheduled eLearning time of May 1.
“We’re trying to make things as easy as possible,” said Josh Burnett, the school corporation’s communications coordinator. “And we’re always willing to serve our families in any way that we can, especially in such uncertain times.”
For now, organizers are planning to feed up to about 1,000 people, according to Brett Boezeman, BCSC’s director of operations. But he added that staff will be on hand at the sites to fill more meal boxes if needed. He also said the food supply is plentiful.
Normally, the school corporation feeds about 7,500 total students daily in its cafeterias.
“We’ve got really good leadership in place (for this),” Boezeman said.
Meals are available to adults for $3.50, according to the school corporation.
The grab and go meals will be offered between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. weekdays at Clifty Creek Elementary School, Schmitt Elementary School, Smith Elementary School, and Taylorsville Elementary School.
And they will be available from noon to 1 p.m. weekdays at the BCSC Administration Building, corner of 12th Street and Cottage Avenue; Central Middle School parking lot; Southside Elementary School parking lot; Columbus East High School parking lot; Elizabethtown Library parking lot; Pence Place Apartments; Heritage Heights subdivision (near the main office); Candlelight Village; Driftside Manufactured Housing Community; Cambridge Square Apartments; Mt. Healthy Elementary School parking lot; and Ninth Street Park.
