HOPE – Bond has been set at $36,000 for a Hope man who was part of a standoff with police Sunday.
Gregory Carter Jr., 32, of 125 Walnut St., Hope, was arrested on three preliminary charges: battery in the presence of a minor as a Level 6 felony, residential entry at a Level 6 felony, and resisting law enforcement as a Class A misdemeanor.
Formal charges, if any, will be determined by the office of Bartholomew County Prosecutor Bill Nash.
At approximately 3:30 p.m., a report of a fight in progress sent Hope officers to Carter’s mobile home on Walnut St., located a block north of South St.
Initially referred to as a domestic dispute, the fight involved Carter and the mother of a woman who was also at the residence, Hope Town Marshall Matt Tallent said. After telling police she had been battered by Carter, the older woman also informed the officers he had four outstanding warrants out of Bartholomew County, Tallent said.
That prompted Carter to retreat inside his mobile home and lock the officers out, Tallent said. Over the next few hours, several unsuccessful attempts were made to try to get the barricaded man to come out and give himself up, the marshal stated.
Finally, the Bartholomew County SWAT team was called to the scene, which is normal procedure for a barricaded subject, Tallent said. In addition, a search warrant was obtained to enter his residence, Tallent said.
The standoff came to an end shortly after SWAT officers deployed tear gas inside the mobile home. At about 7:22 p.m., Carter came out of his residence and was taken into custody, the marshal said.
He was first taken to Columbus Regional Hospital to be medically cleared before being transported to the Bartholomew County Jail.
