The local celebration of the annual National Day of Prayer will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today online at the Facebook page for Bartholomew County National Day of Prayer. Local southern gospel radio station WYGS at 91.1 FM also will broadcast the event live.

Pastor Adam Carrigan of Bethel Baptist Church has chaired the planning committee for the virtual event that includes prayer for everyone from governmental leaders to the military to the media. The COVID-19 pandemic still is preventing larger gatherings.

Late Garden City resident Jean Bunton launched the local nondenominational event in 1992 as a way to ask God’s intervention. Within a couple years, it attracted an estimated 800 to 1,000 people among dozens of different churches, and other strong crowds throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.
