James E. “Shead” Shead, 76, a resident of Columbus, Indiana, passed from this life at 6:04 a.m. Sunday, May 31, 2020 at Silver Oaks Health Campus.
Mr. Shead was born February 4, 1944, in Louisville, Kentucky, the only child born to James E. and Frances Allene Miles Shead Sr.
Mr. Shead was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He rose to the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged from active duty February 12, 1969. After his active duty service, he served in the Indiana Army National Guard.
Early in life, Mr. Shead worked at the Job Corps at Camp Atterbury. He had a long career at Cummins Engine Company, he retired from the gauge laboratory in 2018 after over 40 years of service.
A sports enthusiast, Mr. Shead played sports in his younger years and he was an Indianapolis Colts fan and held season Colts tickets for many years. He was an avid bowler and participated in various bowling leagues. He enjoyed going to the casinos and he was a very competitive card player. He also enjoyed traveling and he loved his dogs, Angel and Holli.
Survivors include his wife, Pam Shead, whom he married September 23, 1988; his children, Michael (Regina) Shead of Louisville, Kentucky, Dewayne (Emma) Shead of Atlanta, Georgia, Chad Shead of Columbus and Brandon Gabbard of Columbus; a daughter-in-law, Donnielle Shead of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Michael Lewis, Michaela, Myciah, Michael Shead Jr., Dewayne Shead Jr., Donte, Devaughn, DeShawn, Martez, Terrell, Jeniqua, Deishaun, and Kiana; 10 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Jimmy (Tashia) Huff; nieces, Ashley, Darian, and Natalie; nephew, Chris (Stephanie) Brown.
Mr. Shead was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Allene Miles.
In keeping with the family’s wishes, cremation will take place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
