In the end, Daveed Jolley wanted to keep playing football.
The recent Columbus North graduate had considered going to Indiana University, just as a student. But he chose to go to Hanover, where he will continue his football career.
“Football was a key part of my final decision,” Jolley said. “I’ve been playing since I was 8 years old and in the second grade. The drive is still there, and I’m not ready to stop. I can’t seem to get enough.”
Jolley was a two-year starter at cornerback and was a backup running back for the Bull Dogs. He recorded 44 tackles, two passes broken up, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick as a senior, when he was named honorable mention All-Conference Indiana.
Hanover went 9-2, won the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference title and earned a Division III playoff berth last fall.
“They’ve had a lot of success, and one of their open spots is at cornerback,” Jolley said. “Since I play cornerback, they told me that I would have a chance to play as a freshman. We’ve talked mainly about cornerback, but safety is another option and there is a possibility of a ‘flex’ spot as an outside linebacker.”
Jolley, who won North’s John R. Skobel Memorial Scholarship, plans to major in business with an eye on a possible career in residential real estate. He is the sixth Bull Dog to commit to play college football and the second headed to Hanover, joining linebacker Jackson Payne.
North track
coach resigns
Trent Hillenburg’s tenure as Columbus North boys track coach is over before it started.
Hillenburg, also was an assistant football coach for the Bull Dogs, spending last fall as the offensive coordinator, and was set to take over the boys track program this year, but the season was canceled because of COVID-19. He announced his resignation from both of those positions earlier this week.
Hillenburg plans to remain at North as a teacher.
Noel headed
to Seymour
Former Columbus North and Ball State football player and former North assistant coach Keenan Noel has been hired as an assistant football coach at Seymour.
Noel joins the staff of new Owls head coach Tyson Moore, a Columbus East graduate.
Local golfers
to compete
Two teams from Columbus are entered in next week’s Indiana Golf Association 2020 Team Event.
The two teams had signed up to play in Monday’s qualifier at Otter Creek, but because only four teams had signed up for that site, they were moved to The Legends. The state finals will be June 11-12 at Purdue.
The Columbus Sandbaggers will feature five Columbus North players and will tee off from 8:50 to 9:30 a.m. The players are Michael Giambiani, Damon Gregory, Andrew Krueger, Jacob Niedbalski and Luke VanDeventer.
The Harrison Lakers will be a mixture of players from three schools and will tee off from 9:50 to 10:30 a.m. The team includes North’s Willy Davis, Luke Schnieder and Jack Schiavello, Columbus East’s Kody Reynolds and Greenwood’s Jackson Watkins.
