Letter: Alternatives to defunding police needed

From: William F. McCullough

Columbus

The idea of defunding or reducing the funding for a police department is not a reasonable option. Many police departments are underfunded now and reducing that funding will increase the problems rather than solving them

Better oversight is a help. No police officer should be allowed to accumulate 18 claims of violence against him. There should have been action taken long before this fatal act. Police departments with body cameras should require them to be on any time a situation occurs with consequences when that requirement is violated.

I realize that policing is a hazardous occupation and drastic measures must be taken to save lives, especially those of the police. Too many recent fatal incidents have not been of that nature. If increased funding, more training, better management, a citizens’ oversight/review committee, or whatever it takes, this must stop. The country is fractured, communities are fractured and society in general is fractured. It is time to get serious about fixing the problems.

Thankfully, we in Columbus have enjoyed a better quality of life because of our police. I have lived here nineteen years and appreciate these folks looking out for our safety. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen for your service.
