Shelbyville certified by organizations

SHELBYVILLE — The Shelbyville Police Department has been certified for five years by two law enforcement organizations requiring police departments to integrate best practices into their standard operating procedures.

The department was certified in 2014 by the national Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies and the Indiana Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission.

Since receiving the certifications, the department has been assessed annually by the organizations, with the next re-certification scheduled for September.

Shelbyville patrol officers responded to 11,191 incidents in the 12 months ending June 19. The 34 officers in the division used force in 47 of those calls and avoided deadly force. There were seven complains during the 12-month period against officers and three of the complaints were sustained. The department did not receive a complaint of bias during that time period, according to city officials.
