CPD arrests two drivers for OWI in an hour

Two people are in custody after Columbus police officers arrested two suspected drunk drivers in less than one hour overnight.

Shortly after 2 a.m., CPD officers responded to the area of Thornybrook Drive and Waycross Drive in regards to a hit and run crash. Officers located the suspect vehicle nearby a short time later and spoke to the driver, Nathan K. Morton, 43, of Columbus, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

While speaking with Morton, officers noted that his balance was poor and he had the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. Morton was transported by officers to Columbus Regional Hospital for a blood draw and was placed under arrest, Harris said.

He was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction within seven years and leaving the scene of an accident, Harris said.

At approximately 2:55 a.m., CPD officers stopped a vehicle for a minor violation in the 300 block of Cleveland Street. The officers spoke to the driver who was identified as Winston J. Cherry, 21, of Columbus, Harris said. While speaking with Cherry, officers noted the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. Officers administered several field sobriety tests to Cherry and later transported him to the Columbus Police Department where he provided a certified breath sample of .103%, Harris said.

Cherry was placed under arrest and taken to the Bartholomew County Jail on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
