Fire damages home on Reo Street

A rental home at 61 Reo St. was heavily damaged by fire Sunday.

Columbus firefighters were sent to the home at 1:54 p.m. Sunday and found heavy fire coming from the back of the home, and learned the occupants had left the structure.

Firefighters started with the rear exterior and then moved to the front of the home, putting out the fire, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

The 1200-square-foot residence sustained significant damages from fire, heat and smoke, Wilson said.

Damages are estimated at $50,000 for building and contents. During the investigation firefighters were unable to locate smoke alarms. According to investigators, four adults were in the home at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, as a result of flammable liquid and vapors igniting near a heat source.

Due to damage caused by the fire, the tenants were displaced. The Salvation Army is assisting tenants with emergency shelter. No injuries were reported at the scene.
