Letter: Immune response is more important than wearing masks

Ever since someone decided that COVID-19 should not spread, official response has included many guidelines. We’re all aware that wearing a mask in public is one of those, and whether out of caution against infection or out of respect for the beliefs of others, many of us are following suit.

For example, while I still call the virus “the Chicken Little virus,” I ask every patient whether or not they want me to wear a mask during their office visit, and quickly do as asked. The problem is that mask recommendations are not based on fact.

Long before COVID-19 was on our radar, a study on masks found that viruses within certain sizes penetrate surgical masks. Since COVID-19 is within those same size ranges, researchers developed a study specific to this new coronavirus. What they found was that there is no statistical difference between no mask, surgical masks, and washable cotton masks, although the latter actually reduced the total number of viruses (counted in the billions) by almost 28% compared to no mask. By comparison, surgical masks stopped only 6% of the viruses.

Both types of masks were found to be coated with coronavirus on both the inside and outside surfaces after use. Wearing a mask may make the wearer feel good about him/her self emotionally, but it has no real value beyond that, unless it would be that of avoiding arrest in Texas this week.

Further investigation has found that mask wearing leads to headaches requiring pain medication. It reduces blood oxygen levels and increased concentrations of viruses in one’s lungs and nasal passages. Now, would you want someone practicing emergency medicine on you while suffering from a headache, taking drugs, and experiencing reduced oxygen to his/her brain? Think about it.

Chiropractors have always seen immune response, or lack thereof, as being far more important than “germs” in the prevention of disease. Even MDs are now recommending such things as medicinal mushrooms, Vitamin C, and zinc to ward off the virus. Wouldn’t that be easier and more sensible?
