A local man has been arrested on felony charges after Columbus police received a report of shots fired on Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 12:45 p.m., CPD officers were sent to the area of Ninth Street and California Street in regards to a report of a firearm that was discharged during an altercation in the area, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Officers recovered evidence at the scene of the altercation and noted that a nearby parked vehicle was struck by the gunfire.

A man later identified as Christopher L. Williams, 25, of 1410 Chestnut St., was seen running in the area and stopped by officers, Harris said. The officers observed Williams drop a bag near a tree in the 1400 block of Sycamore Street. Inside the bag was a loaded 9mm handgun as well as ammunition and personal property that belonged to Williams, Harris said.

Williams was placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail on a 48-hour hold on preliminary charges of criminal recklessness with a firearm (Level 5 felony) and possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon (Level 4 Felony). He was being held in lieu of $55,000 bond at the jail, jail officials said.

The investigation in this case is ongoing and additional charges are possible as the investigation continues, Harris said.
