Columbus Educators Association President Amy London released the following statement about the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. decision to approve a reopening plan for the school year. Here is the statement:
Monday night, Columbus Educators Association President Amy London responded to the
BCSC school board’s decision to adopt the administration’s current reopening plan:
“While CEA appreciated Dr. Bilz’s request for comment from the association during the school board meeting, BCSC has a policy (3112) that prohibits communication between school staff and school board members regarding school issues and policy,” said London.
Union leadership has requested on multiple occasions to be able to participate during school board meetings, but has always been told no.
“As a result, we do not feel that there was a teacher voice at this meeting,” continued London. “We are disappointed that the school district still plans to pursue a regular schedule on August 6th. An overwhelming majority of teachers have said they don’t feel this is possible.”
London said union leadership will again reach out to members to see how they want to proceed. In the meantime, she is looking forward to discussing the current plan with BCSC administration between now and Aug. 6th.
London did relay a positive from the meeting: “We are very happy that the district recognizes the importance of requiring face coverings for adults and students in school.”
