City grants two Commons tenants further rent relief

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Two downtown restaurants received a lifeline during the pandemic in the form of rent relief.

The Columbus Redevelopment Commission has approved a resolution to provide Orange Leaf and Subway, two tenants of the Commons, with a 100% rent abatement until The Commons reopens.

Commission president Sarah Cannon said that the resolution is “subject to formal approval” by the Commons Board, which is essentially the businesses’ landlord.

The commission’s attorney, Stan Gamso, added, “The circumstances are that the, essentially the owner and manager of the building has opted to close the building. It’s not the redevelopment commission. … And since it’s not our decision to close the facility, it would seem to me, it would be best if we would have a formal statement from the Commons Board.”

The Commons, which has been closed since March, has six restaurant tenants, including two, Orange Leaf and Subway, that have been completely closed during the pandemic response.
