Kitchen fire damages apartment at Mapleview

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Fire damaged a kitchen in a unit at the Mapleview Apartments, 2999 Ninth St., at 4:29 p.m. Sunday.

Columbus firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the building and Columbus Police officers assisting in the evacuation of tenants, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

Firefighters located the apartment and a fire suppression crew entered to find a flames located in the apartment’s kitchen. The fire suppression crew applied water to flames and quickly brought the fire under control. The rapid response from firefighters confined the fire to the kitchen and prevented extension to other apartment units.

Damages to the apartment are estimated at $25,000. Firefighters reported that the unattended use of a cooking appliance may have contributed to the fire. The official cause of the fire is under investigation.

Agencies that assisted at the scene include the Columbus Police Department, Columbus Regional Health EMS, Duke Energy, Columbus City Utilities and Vectren Energy.
