Big Lots moves to Clover Center

After several decades in Columbus Center, a discount retailer has moved into a former supermarket building in Clover Center.

Big Lots is now occupying the building at 3075 E. 25th St. that had housed Marsh Hometown Market for several years.

Although the 27,934 square-foot facility is already serving customers, a grand opening is scheduled for Aug. 29.

The larger space will allow Big Lots to introduce a redesigned store format, according to a company spokeswoman.

She added that the Columbus Center location closed on Aug. 5.

It was in the spring of 2017 that the Indianapolis-based Marsh Supermarkets declared bankruptcy. One month before Marsh ceased all of its operations, the Findlay, Ohio based-Fresh Encounter Inc. acquired 15 former Marsh stores in June, 2017, including the one in Clover Center. Over the next six months, the local supermarket remained opened as it was gradually transformed into a Needler’s Fresh Market.

But just four months after their December, 2017 grand opening, the new owner announced they would close the store because, as Fresh Encounter co-owner Julie Anderson said, “it wasn’t getting the traction that we thought we would.”

The building had been vacant since April 2018 before Big Lots began moving in.
