North boys win quad

BROWNSBURG — Top-ranked Columbus North beat three other ranked teams to win a 4K (2.5-mile) quad meet Saturday at Brownsburg. The Bull Dogs finished with 30 points to 48 for No. 3 Fishers, 67 for No. 8 Zionsville and 92 for No. 23 Brownsburg.

Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff led North with a second-place finish in 12 minutes, 27.35 seconds. Austin Pulkowski took fourth in 12:33.09, while Andy Stohr was sixth (12:34.58), Matt Newell eighth (12:37.33), Collin Pruitt 10th (12:51), Evan Carr 11th (12:52.43) and Sam Hobbeheydar 18th (13:18.65).

North girls take 5-way

ELLETTSVILLE — No. 3 Columbus North won a 5-team meet Saturday at Edgewood. The Bull Dogs scored 28 points to 82 for Center Grove and No. 20 Northview, 85 for No. 15 Edgewood and 89 for No. 9 Bloomington South.

Mackenzie Barnett finished second in 18:53.87 for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles) to lead North. Lily Baker took fourth in 19:43.90, while Brianna Newell was sixth (19:53.73), Katherine Rumsey seventh (19:58.20), Abby Jacobi ninth (20:21.62), Jessica Meza 10th (20:22.09) and Ellen White 15th (20:35.79).

East girls, JC boys win

MADISON — The Columbus East girls and Jennings County boys won the Madison Hokum-Karem on Saturday. The meet featured two-person teams taking turns running a mile three times each.

East’s Chloe Krueger and Elizabeth Stevens won the girls race in 41:07.59. Olivia Shoaf and Laurel Knight finished third in 42:27.27, while Jordan Spurgeon and Kerigan Greathouse were sixth (45:22.97), Riley Carothers and Mallory Rupp eighth (46:10.17) and Madison Uphaus and Lynna Hendershot 12th (54:27.43).

Jennings County took the top three places in the boys race to score a perfect six points. Lane Elsner and Gavin Hendrix won in 33:03.96, while Brenden Baker and Ian Campbell finished second in 34:31.64, Drew Stroud and Aiden Ernstes were third (36:53.96), Eli Wahlman and Bryce Regan fifth (38:39.29) and Noah McFall and Lain Ernstes 16th (41:19.84).

East finished second in the boys meet with 31 points. Casey Bartholomew and Tyler Hertle finished fourth in 37:38.29. Mason Curry and Cayden Lynott took ninth in 40:36.49, and Derek Patchett and Charlie Munoz were 18th (43:06.61).

Jet girls finish 13th

SHELBYVILLE — The Hauser and Edinburgh girls finished 13th and 14th with 322 and 424 points, and the Hauser boys took 16th with 404 in the Southwestern (Shelby) Small School Invitational Saturday at Blue River Park.

Western Boone won the girls meet with 76 points. Borden captured the boys meet with 40.

Reiss Kistler and Amanda Steward finished 88th and 92nd to lead the Hauser girls. Tammy Essex was 108th, Addison Jones 110th and Kaitlyn Everroad 112th.

Briana Tomlin led the Lancers with a 125th-place finish. Ciera Myers was 135th, Hannah Pile 136th, Alana Hobbs 140th and Chloe Greathouse 142nd.

Trinity Lutheran’s lone runner, Abby Hildreth, finished 100th.

In the boys race, Hauser’s Ryan Ault finished 10th in 18:32.05 for 5K to lead the Jets. Alex Bower took 64th in 20:42.86, while Colin Kistler was 94th (21:32.75), Cameron Toole 138th (22:43.72) and Austin Cowan 196th (26:54.81).

Edinburgh had three runners. Noah Detling finished 114th in 22:03.67, Parker Young took 218th in 32:21.74 and Tanner Kohr was 220th in 34:30.56.

VOLLEYBALL

Hauser wins tourney

HENRYVILLE — Hauser went 4-0 Saturday to capture the Henryville Tournament for the second year in a row. The Jets beat North Harrison 25-20, 25-18; Edinburgh 25-17, 25-12; Paoli 25-9, 25-3 and Henryville 25-14, 17-25, 15-13.

Hauser (6-0) trailed Henryville 13-12 in the final set before getting a sideout to tie it. Aunka Wasil then came through with a kill, and Adriana Musillami served an ace to win the match.

Hannah Johnson led the Jets with 33 kills and five blocks. Wasil recorded 78 assists, Andie Clark notched 59 digs and Musillami served 10 aces.

Also for Hauser, Charlie Clark pounded 16; Marnie Schwartzkopf added 13 kills, 11 digs and seven aces and Kenzie Bostic tallied 12 kills and four blocks. Wasil added 11 kills, two blocks, 17 digs and six aces; Andie Clark dished out eight assists; Musillami recorded four assists and 20 digs; Stephanie Meek had two blocks and Kyra Meister contribted 17 digs.

Following its loss to Hauser, Edinburgh (2-7) fell to North Harrison 25-14, 25-17, Henryville 25-14, 25-9 and Paoli 25-18, 25-23.

Crusaders top Cougars

South Decatur won the first set Saturday, but Columbus Christian rallied for an 18-25, 30-28, 26-24, 25-13 victory in the Crusaders’ season opener.

With Kinidy Morgan out sick, Hannah Stair moved from setter to outside hitter and recorded 11 kills, four assists and three digs for Columbus Christian. Madison Henderson posted 17 kills, four digs and three aces; and Emily Stair notched two kills, 24 assists, two digs and three aces.

Also for the Crusaders, Kayla Jones tallied four kills, three solo and one assist block, eight digs and three aces; and Lila Hudson added three kills, one block, three digs and one ace. Kenna Conrad contributed one kill, one assist block and two digs, and Anika Jenkins had one kill and one dig.

The Cougars fell to 1-5.

North goes 1-3

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus North went 1-3 in the Franklin Central Invitational. The Bull Dogs beat Indy Genesis 25-12, 25-6 before falling to Pioneer 25-17, 25-19, Franklin Central 25-19, 24-26, 15-12 and Zionsville 25-20, 25-13.

Sarah Bennett led the Bull Dogs (2-3) with four blocks and two aces. Madi Roop pounded 20 kills, Reagan Kane notched 57 assists and Grace Chapman notched 28 digs.

Also for North, Madison White added 15 kills and three blocks, and Kane had four kills and 12 digs. Roop tallied 18 kills and one block, Ava McKinney contributed 14 digs and Logan Branstetter added eight kills.

Jennings gets first win

WALDRON — Jennings County picked up its first win of the season, a 20-25, 25-22, 16-25, 25-11, 15-9 triumph Saturday at Waldron.

Julianne Woodard recorded 10 kills eight blocks and Stella Millspaugh had 20 digs and five aces to lead the Panthers (1-2). Megan Vogel notched 27 assists.

Lucy Ernstes pounded eight kills, and Lily Ernstes aded six kills.

Mustangs sweep Eagles

ELLETTSVILLE — Brown County came close in the third set, but dropped a 25-19, 25-15, 25-22 WIC decision at Edgewood.

Mary Rygiel and Milly Patrick each recorded three kills and two aces for the Eagles (1-1, 0-1). Natalie Suding had five assists, and Rygiel and Londyn Koester each notched six digs.

BOYS TENNIS

North takes second

JEFFERSONVILLE — Columbus North finished second out of eight teams in Saturday’s Jeffersonville Tournament, which was shortened because of rain. Zionsville was the winner.

Nathan Lin went 2-1 and finished second at No. 1 singles. Matthew Liu went 2-1 and placed fourth at No. 2 singles. Joseph Kloepfer went 2-0 at No. 3 singles before having his final match rained out.

Anvay Atram and Amrit Kar went 2-1 and finished second at No. 1 doubles. Luke Enneking and Eric Stavnheim went 1-1 at No. 2 doubles before being rained out of their final match.

Panthers split pair

ST. LEON — Jennings County split two matches in the East Central Invitational, falling to the host Trojans 3-2 before blanking Milan 5-0 in the third-place match.

Justin Ramey at No. 1 singles and Jacob Vogel and Alex Leach at No. 1 doubles went 2-0 for the Panthers (2-3). Greyson Jackson at No. 2 singles, Connor Euler at No. 3 singles and Ryan Schuck and Jansen McDonald at No. 2 doubles all went 1-1.

Knights edge Eagles

BRAZIL — Defending WIC champion Northview pulled out a 3-2 victory against Brown County on Saturday/

Reid Davis beat Ethan Dehart 7-6 (9), 6-1 at No. 3 singles, and Aidan Burt and Eli Sichting downed JD Buell and Landen Carr 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles for the Eagles. (1-2, 0-2)

Brown County’s Josh Miller fell to Brevin Cooper (BC) 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Nolan Patterson lost to Owen Tipton 7-6 (4), 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Spencer Blee and Noah Cochran lost to Calen Swearingen and Chase Nuckols 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

GIRLS GOLF

North takes third

INDIANAPOLIS — No. 8 Columbus North finished third in Saturday’s Roncalli Invitational at Smock.

No. 1 Carmel won with a 302. No. 3 Westfield and the Bull Dogs each shot 316, but the Shamrocks had the better fifth score. No. 5 Center Grove and No. 9 Franklin finished  fourth and fifth, both at 325.

Nathaly Munnicha led North with a 1-over-par 73. Gwen Anderson added a 77, Ella Wilks shot 80, Macy Euler had an 85 and Yestika Nischol finished with an 86.

East rained out

FLOYDS KNOBS — Columbus East got in six holes of the Floyd Central Invitational Saturday at Valley View before the event was canceled because of thunderstorms.

Eagles finish fifth

JASPER — Brown County was without top golfer Ainslie Winton and finished fifth with a 455 in Saturday’s Jasper Invitational. Jasper Black won with a 354 at Buffalo Trace.

Annika Evenson led the Eagles with a 109. Abby Padgett carded a 111, Avery Patterson added a 121, Christy Sebastian shot 123 and Mattie Satter had a 131.

Panthers shoot 473

CONNERSVILLE — Jennings County was without top golfer Sophia Curry and carded a 473 in Saturday’s Connersville Invitational at Willowbrook.

Alexis Carson led the Panthers with a 103. Lauren Galvan added a 112, Emma Jones shot 126 and Emma Kirchner had a 132.

BOYS SOCCER

East nets tie, loss

GREENWOOD — Class 3A No. 16 Columbus East tied one and lost one in Saturday’s Center Grove Classic.

The Olympians tied 3A No. 17 Pike 1-1 after Chris Quisenberry scored off an assist from Jake Hoeflich in the 69th minute. Gavin Edgecomb recorded six saves.

East (1-1-1) then fell to 3A No. 4 Center Grove 5-1. After falling behind 2-0 early Quisenberry scored off an assist by Logan Cline in the 12th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1, but the Trojans added three more goals. Pete Coriden posted eight saves.

North falls to Avon

Avon broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 66th minute Saturday to hand Columbus North a 1-0 defeat.

The Orioles outshot the Bull Dogs (1-1-1) 17-10, putting 10 shots on goal to one for North. Colvin Iorio recorded nine saves.

Spartans blank Jets

HOPE — Hauser opened its season Saturday with a 5-0 Mid-Hoosier Conference loss at Southwestern (Shelby).

Carter Scott recorded seven saves for the Jets.

Panthers fifth in Cup

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County bounced back from a 2-0 loss to Milan 2-0 on Friday with a pair of wins on Saturday to place fifth in its Panther Cup.

Milan outshot Jennings 24-18. Draegan Ison posted 18 saves.

The Panthers beat South Ripley 3-0. Logan McIntosh scored two goals off assists by Christian Hernandez, and Ian Sawyer had the other goal off an assist from Nathan Davis. Ison recorded the shutout in goal.

Jennings (3-1) blanked Morristown 2-0 in the fifth-place match. Keaton Miller scored off an assist from Davis, and Hernandez scored unassisted. Ison posted the shutout.

GIRLS SOCCER

Rebels nip Olympians

Columbus East took its first loss of the season, a 2-1 defeat against Roncalli.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Olympians (1-1) tied it when Alana Dwenger scored off an assist from Abby Miller. But the Rebels punched another one in to take the victory.

East’s Anna Liimatta recorded three saves.

Lions edge Panthers

SALEM — Jennings County scored first Saturday, but Salem rallied for a 2-1 victory.

Zoey Ison scored the goal for the Panthers (1-2). Morgan Lane had the assist.

The Lions outshot Jennings 12-5. Tori Lee recorded three saves before being injured late in the first half, and Grace Ramey posted two saves the rest of the way.

Chargers blank Eagles

NASHVILLE — Brown County opened its season with a 2-0 Western Indiana Conference loss to North Putnam.

Sarah Callahan recorded 19 saves for the Eagles.

Eagles rally for victory

PETERSBURG — Brown County trailed 14-10 at halftime of Friday’s season opener before rallying for a 39-28 win at Pike Central.

"We just basically dominated the third quarter," Brown County coach Randy Minniear said. "I thought that we played well, much better than the score showed," Minniear said. "When we watched the film, we played much better than we thought we had played. Our running backs looked awfully good, and our line opened some holes. It was a good first game for us."

The Eagles racked up 448 total yards of total offense. Seth Oliphant threw for 179 yards and one touchdown and ran ran 42 yards for another score.

Kody Walsh carried 18 times for 88 yards and scored on runs of 3 and 8 yards, and Waunblee Roux ran 39 yards for a touchdown. Malachi Nickels had two catches for 60 yards, including a 42-yard touchdown.

Cameron Payne kicked a 24-yard field goal and four extra points. Hunter Funkhouser ran for two 2-point conversion.

Panthers drop opener

INDIANAPOLIS — Jennings County opened its season Friday with a 52-14 loss at Covenant Christian.

"We didn’t get off the bus ready to play, and they just came out and took it to us," Jennings coach Justun Sharp said. "We have a lot of stuff to work on. It’s a learning experience for a young team."

Quarterback Peyton Hayden ran for more than 100 yards and both Panther touchdowns. Johnny Hifo, a move-in from California, ran for about 50 yards, mostly in the second half.

Lancers fall in OT

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh twice battled back from touchdown deficits in the fourth quarter to send Friday’s game to overtime, but the Lancers couldn’t score in either of two overtimes, and Indianapolis Tindley did in the second extra session to claim a 26-20 victory.

Riley Palmeter hit Caleb Dewey for a 65-yard scoring pass, and Austin Streeval ran 4 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Edinburgh’s first touchdown came on a pass from Palmeter to Landon Burton that gave it a 6-0 lead with 4 minutes left in the first half.

Palmeter finished with 180 yards passing.

Chargers top Cougars

GREENSBURG — North Decatur jumped out to a 14-0 halftime lead and went on to hand South Decatur a 21-7 loss is Friday’s season opener.

The Cougars’ touchdown came in the opening minute of the third quarter on a 65-yard pass from Wyatt Gatewood to Ben Stier. Tyler Sporleder kicked the extra point.
