COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus Police Department School Resource Officer Greg Ross was honored by the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. for his decisive action in a recent incident on school property.

Around 11:15 a.m. on Aug. 19, Ross spotted a man, later identified as Michael K. Jones, 38, of 2612 Griffa Ave., walking in the Central Middle School staff parking lot and acting strangely.

Ross asked Jones if he was carrying weapons and Jones told him he was, school officials said. Jones was taken into custody after Ross determined Jones was carrying two concealed, loaded handguns on his person while in the school parking lot.

At Monday’s school board meeting, Superintendent Jim Roberts commended Ross’s actions and expressed gratitude for the BCSC’s five school resource officers.

“We are blessed to have the partnerships we have in this community with our school resource officers from both the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department and the city of Columbus Police Department,” he said.
