Jackson County man seriously injured in two-vehicle accident

SEYMOUR –Indiana State Police are investigating a near head-on two-vehicle collision that resulted in serious injuries to a Jackson County man.

The accident, which happened at 2 p.m. Thursday, occurred when a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, driven by Albert “Ernie” Ball, 72, Seymour, was traveling north on County Road 760E north of Seymour, said Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, Indiana State Police spokesman.

For an unknown reason, Ball’s vehicle traveled into the southbound lane of County Road 760E into the path of a 2004 Ford F-350 pulling a tandem axle trailer, being driven by David M. Weghorst, 66, Columbus, Wheeles said.

The vehicles collided head-on in the middle of the roadway.  Ball was initially trapped in his vehicle.  He was freed by emergency personnel before being flown from the scene to St. Vincent Hospital-Indianapolis with serious injuries.  Weghorst had minor injuries and was checked out at Schneck Medical before being released, Wheeles said.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be factors in the crash.  The investigation is ongoing and toxicology results are pending.

Wheeles was assisted by other troopers with the Indiana State Police-Versailles Crash Investigation Response Team and assisting at the scene were the Seymour Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Jackson County EMS, Seymour Fire Department, Redding Township Fire Department, St. Vincent Stat-Flight Medical Helicopter, and Hampton’s Wrecker Service.
