In a municipality, who is in charge of the police, their actions, and safety of their citizens? Is it the mayor and chief of police? Of course they are! They will be the first to tell you that, as it should be.
The mayor appoints the chief of police. The chief of police has direct oversight of the police officers to include training and behavior. People claim “let the facts speak for themselves,” and I totally agree. So what are the facts concerning some terrible events?
— Louisville, Kentucky — The death of Breonna Taylor. Greg Fischer, mayor as of 2011, is a Democrat. Democrats have been mayor there since 1973 (47 years).
— Minneapolis, Minnesota — The death of George Floyd. Jacob Frey, mayor as of 2018, is a Democrat. Democrats have been mayor there since 1978 (42 years).
— Kenosha, Wisconsin — The shooting of Jacob Blake. John Antaramian, mayor as of 2016, is a Democrat. Democrats have been mayor there since 1992 (28 years).
— Los Angeles, California — The death of Dijon Kizzee. Eric Garcetti, mayor as of 2013, is a Democrat. Democrats have been mayor there since 2005 (15 years).
–Washington D.C. — The death of Deon Kay. Muriel Bowser, mayor as of 2015, is a Democrat. Democrats have been mayor there since 1961 (59 years).
–Rochester, New York — The death of Daniel Prude. Lovely Warren, mayor as of 2014, is a Democrat. Democrats have been mayor there since 1974 (46 years).
— Portland, Oregon — Riots and an increase in crime. Ted Wheeler, mayor as of 2017, is a Democrat. Democrats have been mayor there since 2005 (15 years).
— Chicago, Illinois — Increases in crime, shootings and murder. Lori Lightfoot, mayor as of 2019, is a Democrat. Democrats have been mayor there since 1931 (89 years).
— New York City, New York — Increases in crime, shootings and murder. Bill de Blasio, mayor as of 2014, is a Democrat. Democrats (including Bloomberg posing as a Republican) have been mayor there since 2002 (18 years).
The facts indicate there is a common denominator in all of these municipalities — they are run by Democrats, and have been for some time. Therefore I am confused as to why some people are claiming these terrible things are the fault of our current (Republican) president who has been in office only four years.
I am not aware of the POTUS directly managing any municipality’s police force. So again, let’s properly identify who is in charge and is really responsible for these terrible actions. When do these mayors and their political party take responsibility for actions within their municipality and the actions of their police force?
