COLUMBUS, Ind. — About 100 St. Bartholomew Catholic School students helped with a cleanup of North Christian Church on Thursday as part of a volunteer effort at the church property off Tipton Street.
While this work took place at the same time that volunteers began pitching in for the United Way’s Day of Caring, the North Christian project was different. It commemorated September as being the Season of Creation, St. Bartholomew Parish spokeswoman Kelly Glick said.
The observance encourages Catholics to join with other Christian denominations every September to mutually care for God’s creation. In many communities, the observance has resulted in joint efforts to promote ecology.
But the work done by St. Bartholomew middle school students was mostly done as a simple gesture of appreciation to their church neighbor, Glick said.
For some time now, North Christian has invited St. Bartholomew students to utilize their property for recreational outings during the school year, Glick said.
So when religion teacher Chris Schwartz saw a posting that North Christian was seeking volunteers to help clean up their property, the St. Bartholomew educator thought it would be a good service project for her middle school students, Glick said.
