A Columbus teacher is the newest member of the Bartholomew County Library board.

Stephen Shipley, a sixth trade teacher at CSA Lincoln, is taking the seat of Brenda Tallent. After completing her third term in April, Tallent said she did not wish to serve a fourth term on the board, library director Jason Hatton said.

Now in his seventh year of teaching in Columbus, Shipley said he also also taught in Marion, Brown and Johnson counties.

"I have a passion for reading, and it’s something I pride myself in," Shipley said.  "I love introducing my students to the joys of learning, and turning kids who otherwise wouldn’t give books a chance to become devoted readers."

Having a full seven-member board again will help the library board maintain quorums, as well as avoid tie votes, Hatton said.

Two are selected by the county council, two by the county commissioners, two by Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. and one by the Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp.
