East downs New Albany

NEW ALBANY — Alana Dwenger netted three goals and three assists Saturday to lead Columbus East to a 6-2 Hoosier Hills Conference win at New Albany.

Hannah Hemmerlein scored two goals, and Abby Miller added the other goal for the Olympians (8-4, 5-0). Sydney Berkemeier had two assists.

East outshot the Bulldogs 21-10. Anna Liimatta recorded six saves.

BOYS SOCCER

Olympians tie Knights

NEWBURGH — Columbus East played to a 0-0 tie at Class 3A No. 8 Castle.

Both teams took 16 shots, and both teams had eight shots on goal. Pete Coriden recorded eight saves for the Olympians (3-2-5).

Spartans stop Jets

SHELBYVILLE — Hauser endured a 6-0 Mid-Hoosier Conference setback at Southwestern (Shelby) on Friday.

Carter Scott posted 17 saves for the Jets (3-6-2, 1-2).

Hornets top Trinity

SCOTTSBURG — Trinity Lutheran finished play in Scottsbur’s Warrior Cup on Friday with a 9-0 loss to Henryville 9-0.

The Hornets outshot the Cougars (1-7) 30-10. Peyton Pollert recorded 21 saves.

Jet boys capture MHC

SHELBYVILLE — Ryan Ault won the boys race to lead Hauser to the Mid-Indiana Conference boys team title Saturday at Blue River Park

The Jets scored 39 points to 62 for runner-up Southwestern (Shelby) and 79 for South Decatur. Edinburgh took sixth with 160.

Ryan Ault ran 17 minutes, 45.84 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Also for Hauser, Alex Bower finished ninth in 20:00.62, followed by Colin Kistler in 10th (20:06.24), Tanner Ault 11th (20:16.37) and Comeron Toole 12th (20:17.51).

Trevor Newby led the Cougars with a fourth-place finish in 18:53.12. Jack Hamilton took 13th in 20:26.04, while Tyler Hibberd was 16th (20:43.09), Chase Kalli 23rd (21:08.85) and Donovan Hale 27th (21:51.87).

Noah Detling finished 15th in 20:31.42 to lead the Lancers. Parker Young took 40th in 28:59.47, while Jayden Kohr was 41st (31:02.02), Tanner Kohr 44th (34:14.43) and Ethan Campbell 45th (37:04.21).

Waldron won the girls meet with 41 points to 62 for North Decatur, 63 for South Decatur and Southwestern and 106 for Hauser.

Emma Gatewood and Kate Hamilton finished eighth and ninth in 23:57.67 and 23:57.85 to lead the Cougars. Bridget Nobbe took 14th in 25:49.29, whie Clair Schoettmer was 15th (26:06.52) and Elizabeth Flessner 17th (26:37.53).

Amanda Steward led the Jets with an 11th-place finish in 25:11.46. Reiss Kistler took 19th in 26:50.02, whi;e Tammy Essex was 23rd (27:22.01), Addison Jones 26th (27:27.87) and Kaitlynn Everroad 27th (28:20.84).

Edinburgh had three girls runners. Briana Tomlin finished 31st in 33:51.66, Alana Hobbs took 32nd in 24:02.14 and Chloe Greathouts was 34th in 34:41.49.

Panthers win own invite

VERNON — Jennings County’s boys edged Seymour 57-58 to win their Ray Gerkin Invitational Saturday at Muscatatuck Park.

Gavin Hendrix and Lane Elsner finished sixth and seventh in 16:29 and 16:32 to lead the Panthers. Brenden Baker took 11th in 16:39, while Eli Wahlman was 17th (17:15) and Ian Campbell 18th (17:18).

Columbus East finished 11th with 300 points. Tyler Hertle took 40th in 18:10, while Casey Bartholomew was 60th (18:50), Mason Curry 74th (19:14), Derek Patchett 97th (19:50) and Cayden Lynott 102nd (19:59).

Corydon Central won the girls meet with 61 points, followed by Seymour (65), Madison (75), East (79) and Jennings (98).

Chloe Krueger led the Olympians with a sixth-place finish in 20:07. Laurel Knight took 12th in 20:35, while Jordan Spurgeon was 24th (21:43), Olivia Shoaf 27th (22:04) and Carly Otte 32nd (22:47).

Halle Franks finished ninth in 20:27 to lead the Panthers. Liz Wahlman and Elizabeth Evans took 20th and 21st in 21:29 and 21:30, while Grace Gambrel was 29th (22:30) and Sarah Poole 51st (24:31).

BOYS TENNIS

North downs Floyd

No. 13 Columbus North won three matches in straight sets in a 4-1 victory Saturday against Floyd Central.

Nathan Lin beat Gabe Cora 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and Matthew Liu downed Isaac Anderson 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles for the Bull Dogs (10-1). Amrit Kar and Jacob Shinkle outlasted Landon Hodges and Colin Jacobi 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles, and Luke Enneking and Eric Stavnheim topped Braden Poe and Nolan Wisman 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

North’s Joseph Kloepfer fell to Cole Anderson 4-6, 7-5, (10-5) at No. 3 singles.

Jets, Lancers win MHC

HOPE — Hauser won both doubles titles, and Edinburgh swept the three singles spots in Saturday’s MHC individual tournament.

In the championship matches, the Lancers, Max Blandford beat Southwestern’s Tristan Pappano 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Travis Jones topped Hauser’s Eli Miller 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Chase Littlejohn downed Southwestern’s Justin Swift 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.

The Jets’ Caleb Hoover and Levi Gollmer beat Southwestern Grant Emerick and Matt Clements in the final at No. 1 doubles. Hauser’s Carson Rose and Dawson Paul defeated Trevor Moon and Braedyn Johnson 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 2 doubles final.

Olympians take fourth

Columbus East fell to Providence 4-1, Greenwood 5-0, Evansville Memorial 5-0 in Saturday’s East Invitational.

Daniel Murphy was victorious at No. 2 singles against Providence for the Olympians (5-9).

South Putnam nips BC

NASHVILLE — South Putnam won three matches in straight sets to hand Brown County a 3-2 Western Indiana Conference defeat.

Josh Miller beat Nate Clearwaters 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles for the Eagles (7-7, 3-3). Noah Cochran and Spencer Blee downed Ethan Wallace and Marcus Robinson 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.

Brown County’s Nolan Patterson fell to Trey Blaydes 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and Jack Sichting lost to Brady Robinson 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 sigles. Eli Sichting and Austen Deckard fell to Eli Smith and Trystan Smithers 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Jennings in Whiteland invite

WHITELAND — Jennings County fell to Shelbyville, Batesville and Whiteland all by 4-1 scores to finish fourth in Saturday’s Whiteland Invitational.

Owen Law won at No. 1 singles against Shelbyville and teamed with Jacob Vogel to win at No. 1 doubles against Whiteland. Vogel and Greyson Jackson won at No. 1 doubles against Batesville for the Panthers (3-11).

Bull Dogs go 1-3

NEW ALBANY — Columbus North fell to Jasper 25-15, 25-19 and New Albany 25-18, 25-13, beat Jeffersonville 25-10, 18-25, 15-12 and lost to Castle 25-23, 25-11 to finish 1-3 in Saturday’s New Albany Invitational.

Reagan Kane led the Bull Dogs (6-12) with 52 assists and four aces. Madi Roop pounded 25 kills, Madison White had four blocks, Grace Chapman notched 31 digs and Sydney Cooper served four aces.

Also for North, Sarah Bennett tallied 17 kills and two aces. Roop added 27 digs.

Jets win 1 of 4

LAWRENCEBURG — Hauser beat Rising Sun 25-16, 25-20 and lost to Rushville 25-22, 25-15, Rock Creek Academy 15-25 22-25, 17-15 and Muncie Central 25-20, 25-17 to finish 1-3 in Saturday’s Lawrenceburg Invitational.

Marnie Schwartzkopf pounded 24 kills, Aunaka Wasil recorded 70 assists, Kenzie Bostic had 12 blocks, Andie Clark notched 116 digs and Sophia Musillami served eight aces to lead the Jets (10-5).

Also for Hauser, Charlie Clark tallied 19 kills and 49 digs, and Sophia Musillami and Bostic each added 11 kills. Adriana Musillami posted 43 digs and three aces, and Wasil and Andie Clark each served three aces.

Crusaders finish third

Columbus Christian went 3-2-1 Saturday to finish third out of 16 teams in Calumet Christian’s Coach Casey Classic.

The Crusaders lost to Heritage Christian (Dyer) 25-23, 25-16; beat Cru Blazers Maroon 25-16, 25-11; tied Illiana Christian JV 25-19, 26-27; beat SWCHA (Wisconsin) 25-22, 21-25, 15-9; lost to Goshen Homeschool 25-15, 25-10 and beat Heritage Christian (Dyer) 27-26, 25-20.

Emily Stair made the All-Tournament team after recording 14 kills, 65 assists, 71 digs and 17 aces. for Columbus Christian (14-2-1). Madison Henderson notched 44 kills, one block, 64 digs and 12 aces, Hannah Stair tallied 41 kills, one block, 44 digs and six aces and Kayla Jones had 77 digs and seven aces.

Also for the Crusaders, Lila Hudson posted four kils, one solo and one assist block, four digs and four aces, and Kinidy Morgan had 37 digs. Kenna Conrad contributed three kills, one assist block and two digs, Lindsey Hunnicutt pounded two kills and Isabella VanCuren added one kill, one block and one dig.

On Friday, Columbus Christian beat Dugger Union 25-11, 25-15, 25-17. Henderson recorded seven kills, one block assist, 13 digs and six aces; Hannah Stair notched 11 kills, three digs and two aces, Emily Stair had six kills, 15 assists, seven digs and four aces and Jones added one kill, 10 digs and six aces.

Also for the Crusaders, Morgan tallied two kills, five digs and one ace, Hudson posted three kills, two assist blocks and three digs and Conrad contributed two kills, one assist block and one dig.

Chargers sweep Cougars

GREENSBURG — South Decatur returned to the court for the first time in more than two weeks Saturday and came away with a 25-21, 25-16, 25-15 MHC loss to North Decatur.

Lana Bell recorded 17 kills and one block, and Ali Jameson had 11 assists and two aces to lead the Cougars (5-8, 1-1). Karma Warren notched 10 digs.

GIRLS GOLF

Two Panthers advance

MADISON — Jennings County missed by two shots of qualifying for regional as a team with a fourth-place finish in Saturday’s Madison Sectional.

The Panthers finished with a 411 at Sunrise. Madison (375), Lawrenceburg (408) and Scottsburg (409) claimed the three qualifying spots to the Roncalli Regional.

Jennings County did have two individuals qualify for regional, with Sophia Curry and Alexis Carson each shooting 90 to tie for second invividually. Lauren Galvan carded a 108, Emma Jones added a 123 and Emma Kirchner shot 130.

FOOTBALL

Cougars top Lancers

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh scored first and last Saturday night, but South Decatur put up 41 consecutive points in the middle to claim a 41-15 Mid-Hoosier Conference victory in the Cougars’ first game in a month.

Quarterback Wyatt Gatewood scored on runs of 4 and 2 yards, and Clayton McNealy scored on runs of 15 and 19 yards in the first half to give the Cougars (1-1, 1-1) a 28-8 halftime lead. Gatewood added another 2-yard touchdowns run in the third quarter, and backup quarterback Kelbi Shook hit Cody Diekhoff with a 19-yard scoring pass.

Riley Palmeter threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Dewey in the first quarter and a 14-yard scoring toss to Landon Burton in the final minute for the Lancers (1-4, 1-3). Palmeter also hit Dewey with a 2-point conversion pass.

Vikings rally past Eagles

NASHVILLE — Brown County led 8-0 at halftime Friday, but West Vigo rallied for 26-14 WIC Green Division win.

Seth Oliphant threw for one touchdown and ran for another for the Eagles (3-2, 1-1), who were plagued by four turnovers and a blocked punt. Also, Kody Walsh had an interception return for a touchdown called back because of a penalty.

Panthers fall to Cubs

MADISON — Michael Haines threw for 221 yards and a touchdown, and Peyton Hayden ran for 109 yards and a score, but it wasn’t enough for Jennings County in a 42-13 HHC loss Friday at Madison.

Hayden scored on a 33-yard run in the second quarter to cut the Cubs’ lead to 21-7. Haines threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Samuel Burkman in the fourth quarter.

Burkman finished with nine catches for 81 yards for the Panthers (0-5, 0-3). Cole Marksberry added two catches for 76 yards and led the defense with eight tackles.
