I love candy corn and chocolate as much as the next person, but I don’t really need any more candy.
I suspect the same is true for most children and grandchildren, so here’s an alternative idea for this Halloween: If the children in your life will still be trick-or-treating this year, why not have them ask for non-perishable foods and hygiene items? Trick-or-treaters could then take the bag of goodies to food pantries like Ethan’s Table (which is actually operated by a local youth) or Love Chapel.
Celebrating Halloween this way offers a unique opportunity for young people to help others through their own efforts. It might also spur some interesting family conversations along the way.
Oh, and there’s no reason there couldn’t be a celebration for the trick-or-treaters, maybe with a few of their favorite candies, once they get home.
