The Columbus Police Department plans to post a virtual presentation regarding one of the organizations under which it is accredited.
Mary Ferdon, the city’s executive director of administration and community development, said that on Sept. 28, a representative from the Commission on the Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies gave a virtual presentation about the commission for city officials over WebEx.
CALEA is one of two organizations through which the CPD is accredited. The other is the Indiana Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission. Chief Mike Richardson said that the CPD will be assessed for reaccreditation by CALEA in 2021.
He also said that access to the CALEA virtual presentation will be posted on the CPD’s website, which is www.columbus.in.gov/police/.
In addition to accreditation, the CPD reviews its policies with CALEA and listens to recommendations from the commission on its general orders. In a recent instance of this, the CPD followed the commission’s recommendation and added a new general order requiring law enforcement employees to intervene when they witness another employee enact “unreasonable use of force.”
