East wins own invitational

Columbus East beat Plainfield 25-22, 25-23, Franklin 25-22, 25-27, 15-7 and Class 2A No. 1 Barr-Reeve 25-16, 13-25, 15-13 in pool play and downed 2A No. 2 Heritage Christian 23-25, 25-13, 15-10 in the title match Saturday to win the East Invitational.

Reece Whitehead pounded 34 kills, Katy Jordan recorded 106 assists, Libby Dippold had three solo and nine assist blocks, Cadence Gilley notched 54 digs and Gabby Dean served six aces to lead the Olympians (18-5).

Also for East, Dean tallied 20 kills and three solo and six assist blocks. Libby Dippold posted 15 kills Saige Stahl had seven assist blocks and 36 digs, Jordan added two solo blocks and four aces, Whitehead contributed 30 digs and Gilley served five aces.

North splits pair of matches

Columbus North split two Conference Indiana matches on Saturday, beating Terre Haute North 25-21, 25-16, 25-16 and falling to Terre Haute South 23-25, 26-24, 25-10, 25-20.

Reagan Kane led the Bull Dogs (8-21, 2-3) with 66 assists and two aces. Sarah Bennett pounded 34 kills, Madison White had 11 blocks, Ava McKinney notched 35 digs and Sydney Cooper served two aces.

Also for North, Madi Roop recorded 24 kills, two blocks and 33 digs. White tallied 22 kills, Bennett posted four blocks, Logan Branstetter had two blocks and Cooper added 20 digs.

Lancers take runner-up

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh finished second in its own tournament on Saturday.

The Lancers (7-22) beat Jac-Cen-Del 25-21, 12-25, 15-13 and West Washington 25-16, 25-17 in pool play before falling to Greenwood Christian Academy 25-11, 25-10 in the title match.

Panther boys win sectional

AUSTIN — Gavin Hendrix won the boys race to lead Jennings County to the Austin Sectional title on Saturday. The Panthers scored 25 points to 70 for runner-up Austin.

Hendrix ran 16 minutes, 55.0 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Lane Elsner and Brenden Baker finished third and fourth in 17:25.4 and 17:29.4, while Eli Wahlman and Logan McIntosh were eighth and ninth in 17:56.8 and 18:01.4.

The Panther girls also advanced to Saturday’s Columbus North Regional. Madison won with 38 points to 60 for Charlestown and 64 for Jennings.

Halle Franks led the Panthers with a fourth-place finish in 21:30.2. Elizabeth Evans took 12th in 22:42.6, while Elizabeth Wahlman was 21st (23:27.2), Sarah Poole 30th (24:44.5) and Grace Gambrel 31st (24.50.3).

Cougar individuals advance

AURORA — South Decatur’s girls finished seventh and the boys ninth in Saturday’s South Dearborn Sectional.

The Cougars did advance one boy and one girl to regional as individuals. Kate Hamilton finished 24th in the girls race in 22:39.1, and Trevor Newby took 25th in the boys race in 18:32.5.

Trinity wins sectional

CLARKSVILLE — Trinity Lutheran scored a pair of first-half goals and held on to beat Providence 2-0 Saturday in the Providence Sectional final.

Kailene Cockerham and Sarah Lemming scored the goals for the Cougars (7-7). Kathryn Whitmore had an assist.

The Pioneers outshot Trinity 13-7. Genesis Munoz recorded 13 saves.

Cougars blank Twisters

GREENSBURG — South Decatur posted its second consecutive shutout, a 28-0 Mid-Indiana Football Conference decision against Oldenburg Academy.

Clayton McNealy ran for 108 yards and three touchdowns for the Cougars (4-1, 3-1). Wyatt Gatewood ran for 99 yards and threw a 13-yard scoring pass to Tyler Spordler.

Kelbi Shook had an interception for the defense.

Lancers rout Lions

EDINBURGH — Riley Palmeter threw for 334 yards and four touchdowns, and Edinburgh posted its first shutout in five years, a 42-0 victory Friday against Rock Creek Academy.

Palmeter ran 1 yard for a touchdown, hit Austin Streeval for a 7-yard score, connected with Caleb Dewey from 23 and 53 yards out and tossed a 4-yard TD pass to Landen Burton. Austin Streeval ran 85 yards for a score.

Dewey caught four passes for 161 yards, and Streeval had four catches for 112 yards for the Lancers (2-6).

Red Devils top Panthers

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County outgained Jeffersonville 224-202 on the ground Friday, but had only seven passing yards in a 41-14 Hoosier Hills Conference loss.

Colton Ross scored on a 21-yard run in the first quarter, and Branden Braun ran 12 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter for the Panthers (1-7, 0-5). Michael Haines carried 16 times for 93 yards, and Peyton Hayden had 20 carries for 86 yards.
