Coroner’s office identifies victim of fatal fire in Edinburgh

Staff Reports

EDINBURGH — The Johnson County Coroner’s Office on Monday identified the man who died in a weekend apartment fire.

Gary Lee Perry, 68, was found dead after an early morning fire Saturday at a three-unit Edinburgh apartment complex.

Edinburgh firefighters found the apartment building in the 100 block of West Thompson Street fully engulfed in flames when they arrived at the scene at 4:07 a.m. Saturday, according to an earlier Edinburgh Police Department news release.

The first and third apartments were occupied in the three-unit complex at the time of the fire, and the resident of the second unit was not home, according to the news release.

An individual in the first apartment was able to evacuate, but a man in the third unit was found dead, the news release said.

Perry’s death was ruled accidental, but the cause of death is still under investigation by the Johnson County Coroner’s Office, coroner Craig Lutz said. An autopsy is scheduled today, he said.

The cause of the fire also remained under investigation Monday.
