Joan Helt, 91, of Columbus, passed from this life at 9:42 a.m. Monday, October 19, 2020 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.

Mrs. Helt was born May 25, 1929, in Shelby County, Indiana, the daughter of Everett and Mary Effie Phares Vice.

Joan was a graduate of Columbus High School. She was active in the grocery business most of her working life and was the owner of Bill’s Food Mart. In her retirement years she also worked as a school crossing guard, Hangar Restaurant and Dibble Drugs.

Joan will be remembered for her love of life and her quick-witted sense of humor. She enjoyed vacationing, cooking wonderful meals for her family and friends, going fishing, and was an excellent gardener known for tending to her beautiful flowers. Joan was a member of East Columbus Christian Church, with her faith and love for Christ sustaining her through the loss of two children.

Joan married Russell Helt, also of Columbus, January 18, 1950. He preceded her in death April 30, 1978.

Survivors include her children, Linda Bennett and Randy (Nancy) Helt; grandchildren, Kirt (Lindsey) Fiesbeck, Kevin Fiesbeck , Mickey (Kelly) Bennett, Maci Jo (Marlin) Cox, Justin (Kate) Brown, Sarah Jo (Sean) McKinney; 15 great-grandchildren; siblings, Norman (Clem) Vice of Laurel, Mississippi and Lois Vice of Seymour; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; son, Timothy Eugene Helt; daughter, Sandra Fiesbeck Corbin; sister, Teresa Hundley; and brothers, James and Gene Vice.

The funeral will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Ron Bridgewater officiating.

Family and friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to time of service Thursday at the funeral home.

We do ask that visitors follow the social distancing guidelines once inside the funeral home and masks are required.

Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or East Columbus Christian Church.
