Columbus police arrested an intoxicated man after the vehicle’s owner found him sleeping inside her car early Sunday morning.
At approximately 3:45 a.m., officers responded to the 1700 block of 25th Street about a man asleep in a vehicle. The woman who owns the car said she had just completed her work shift at a downtown business and stopped at a gas station. She advised that she did not know the man was in her backseat until she heard him snoring, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.
Officers observed the man, who was later identified as William D. Hickey, 24, of 395 Morningside Drive, face down in the backseat of the caller’s vehicle. When the officers woke Hickey up, they detected the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, Harris said.
Hickey was argumentative with officers and struck his head repeatedly against the safety partition in the back seat of a CPD patrol vehicle after he was arrested, Harris said.
After being medically cleared at Columbus Regional Hospital, Hickey was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, public intoxication, unlawful entry into a motor vehicle and disorderly conduct.
Hickey has since been released from jail on the county’s program that allows qualifying defendants to be released without posting bond.
