The COVID-19 Community Task Force’s latest community spread update shows indicators increasing, with one in substantial spread and others in moderate.
The COVID-19 dashboard indicators are intended to guide the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. on deciding whether or not schools can continue to meet for in-person learning, which began Aug. 10.
Whether or not in-person learning continues at BCSC depends on whether certain COVID-19 data indicates that the school system is in a “minimal,” “moderate” or “substantial” spread category.
Monday’s update from the task force showed the following:
There are 26 new cases, and the number is holding steady (as of Nov. 1)
The per capita positive rate is 24.6 and increasing (as of Nov. 1)
The percent positive test rate is 12.4% and increasing (as of Oct. 28)
There are 11 COVID-19 hospitalizations, and the number is increasing (as of Nov. 1)
Test turnaround time is 3.2 days and increasing (as of Nov. 1)
Per capita rate is in substantial spread. Percent positive test rate is in moderate spread, as are test turnaround time and hospitalizations.
Superintendent Jim Roberts has said in the past that an overall designation of substantial spread would result in a move to eLearning.
Recently, the school corporation added a hybrid learning model to its reopening plan as a possible response to increased spread. Higher COVID-19 indicators could lead to an implementation of this plan, though the hybrid model is divided into categories based on the state’s COVID-19 indicators, not those reported by the task force.
On Friday, the school corporation reported that it has had 82 confirmed positive cases since the first day of school on Aug. 10. The number is up 16 from the previous week’s report. Of those cases, 55 have been students, 10 have been teachers and 17 have been support staff. The total counts both in-person and remote learning individuals.
