Five local swimmers returned to competition for the first time since last high school season in last weekend’s Return to the Nat meet at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium.
Entries were limited to 50 swimmers for each of the three sessions per day. Club Olympia swimmers Brady Beyer, Nalanie Cortez and Ashley Freel and Franklin Regional Swim Team’s Daniel Utterback, a Columbus North sophomore, competed in the session for Speedo Sectional qualifiers.
Beyer led Club Olympia with first-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200 breaststroke, swimming a personal-best time in the 100. Beyer also placed third in the 200 backstroke, fourth in the 200 butterfly, seventh in the 200 individual medley and 14th in the 200 butterfly.
Cortez was coming down with a sinus infection, but still placed second in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle; sixth in the 200 butterfly, 11th in the 100 butterfly and 13th in the 200 IM.

Freel had four personal-best times in her six events. She finished third in the 50 freestyle; fourth in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly; and 12th in the 200 IM.
Utterback placed fifth in the 50 freestyle, sixth in the 100 freestyle, seventh in the 100 butterfly and eighth in the 200 freestyle.
Meanwhile, Donner Swim Club’s Christoper Lee, a North senior, swam in the session for US Open qualifiers. He finished sixth in the 50 freestyle, seventh in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke and 11th in the 200 freestyle.
BROOMball
CCA, Earl win openers
CCA and Our Name is Earl posted shutout wins on the opening week of the Columbus Broomball League season.
Max Warr netted six goals to lead CCA to a 7-0 win against Toyota Tsunamis. Dave Dickinson scored the other goal.
Tom Kareus had three goals to lead Our Name is Earl to a 4-0 victory against Jennings County BC. Ellie Lutz netted the other goal.
Hansons and The Steagles played to a 2-2 tie. Matt Psota and Ryan Ingalls scored for Hansons, and Ben Eckhart and Tyler Rash scored for The Steagles.
Hockey
Icemen win one of four
The Columbus Icemen went 1-3 last weekend, falling to Central Indiana Knights 4-2, Homestead 4-2 and Northern Kentucky 7-4 and beating Westfield 4-0.
Brayson Bennett led the Icemen with three goals and five assists. Andrew Clark netted three goals and two assists, Ty Boone and Joe Neal each scored two goals, Ethan Kuniewicz recorded one goal and three assists, Evan Federle had one goal and one assist and John Ferguson added three assists. Jake McMullen was in net two games with 52 saves on 63 shots, and Ben Blanz was in net two games with 29 saves on 33 shots.
Columbus Flames Bantams split with the Cincinnati Swords, winning 3-2 and falling 2-1. Dane Weinzapfel scored two goals, Wyatt Warner netted one goal and two assists, Hayden Johnson had one goal and John Roberts and Cole Vreeland each added assist. Jackson Wheatley and Zach Goggins were each in net one game.
