‘Deck the Town’ back for Hope

HOPE — There’s at least one annual event in northeast Bartholomew County that won’t be canceled this year. It’s the annual “Deck The Town” competition, sponsored by the Main Street of Hope committee.

All homes within the town limits decorated for Christmas will be eligible to win the “major” prize — which is the same model of lamp featured prominently in the 1983 holiday classic “A Christmas Story.”

Those aware of the film likely know the “major” prize is a 1920s flapper-style “leg lamp.” The shapely prize in a fishnet stocking overjoys the father (Darren McGavin) — but is despised by his wife (Melinda Dillon), who “accidentally” destroys it while house cleaning.

In order to vote in the “Deck The Town” contest, those with internet access must choose to “like” the Main Street of Hope Facebook page, where photographs of homes within the town’s limits decorated for Christmas will be posted beginning on Dec. 16.

The sender of the photo that receives the most “likes” will have possession of the leg lamp until mid-January, when it will be placed back into storage. However, the name and address of the winner will be permanently engraved on a commemorative plaque that will travel with the lamp in the future.

Photos of entry homes decorated for Christmas must be put on display on the Main Street of Hope Facebook page by the end of the day on Wednesday, Dec. 16 — the same day voting begins. You can press “like” on your favorite until voting concludes at 10 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20.

While all homes featured in the photos must be located within the Hope town limits, you do not need to live in the northeast Bartholomew County town to vote in the contest.
