Changes are taking place to a couple of conference meets involving Columbus East and Columbus North.
The Hoosier Hills Conference wrestling tournament, which was scheduled for Jan. 16, has been moved to Saturday. The meet will begin at 9 a.m. at Madison.
East is an overwhelming favorite to defend its HHC title. The Olympians have been granted permission to compete in the event, even though Madison is in a county in the Red level on the state’s COVID-19 dashboard.
The Jan. 16 Conference Indiana boys and girls swim meet will be held virtually at three locations. North and Southport will compete at Southport, while Bloomington North and Bloomington South will swim at Bloomington South and Terre Haute North and Terre Haute South will compete at the Vigo County Aquatic Center.
Barker climbs scoring list
Blake Barker has moved into third place on Columbus North’s all-time scoring list and is rapidly approaching second place.
The 6-foot-1 senior, who has committed to play at Army, passed Evan Henry (2010-14) for third on the list in a Dec. 29 loss at Lawrence Central. Barker now has 1,249 points going into Friday’s game at Terre Haute North.
Barker sits only 23 points behind second-place Bill Russell, who scored 1,272 points for Columbus High School from 1959-63. Josh Speidel, who totaled 1,512 points for North from 2011-15, is the all-time leader.
Kent reaches milestone
Jennings County senior Addyson Kent reached the 1,000-point mark Dec. 29 in the Panthers’ 54-47 win against Charlestown in Scottsburg’s Cheatham Classic.
Kent became the seventh Panther girl to reach the milestone.
East adds girls games
Columbus East has added a pair of girls basketball games to replace games that were canceled after scheduled opponents were in quarantine or in counties at the Red level in the state’s COVID-19 dashboard.
The Olympians will visit Salem on Jan. 23. The junior varsity will begin at 11 a.m., with the varsity to follow at around 12:30 p.m.
East will host Cathedral on Jan. 28. The JV will tip at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity at around 7:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Olympians swim meet scheduled for tonight against Bedford North Lawrence has been canceled because Lawrence County is in the Red level.
