Columbus firefighters responded to a residential fire in Candlelight Village Saturday afternoon.

At approximately 1:04 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to 2599 Rosedale Drive, where flames were visible coming from a mobile home, said Capt. Mike Wilson, Columbus Fire Department spokesman.

Upon arrival, officers with the Columbus Police Department advised firefighters that the occupants of the home were outside of the residence, but that one of the individuals was possibly suffering from smoke inhalation, Wilson said. Paramedics from Columbus Regional Health EMS transported the occupant from the scene, he said.

Wilson said firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control within 15 minutes, but that the flames caused significant damage to the home and its contents.

He said that a preliminary investigation into the fire’s origin indicated that the fire may have been caused by an unattended heating device too close to combustible material inside the home. However, the exact cause is still under investigation, Wilson said.

Damages to the home and its contents are estimated at approximately $80,000.

According to reports from firefighters, no working smoke alarms were located in the residence.

CFD reminds residents that every home should have at least one working smoke alarm, and that a working smoke alarm can provide early warning of a fire — and allows occupants the critical time it takes to safely escape a residential fire, Wilson said.
