Bartholomew County unemployment rate down to 3.3%

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Unemployment in Bartholomew County declined last month to its lowest level since the pandemic started, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development announced Wednesday.

In December, the unemployment rate in Bartholomew County was 3.3%, down from 3.9% in November and 17.2% in April, state records show. By contrast, the jobless rate in the county was 2.1% in December 2019.

The decline in the local unemployment rate in December mirrored a trend seen across much of the state, where unemployment also ticked down last month to its lowest level since the pandemic took root.

“Our unemployment rate continues to trend in a positive direction,” said Department of Workforce Development Commissioner Fred Payne during a news briefing Wednesday. “…Our labor force participation rate is 64%. That’s very similar to where it was back in January 2020.”
