COLUMBUS, Ind. — Bartholomew County Sheriff deputies have identified the victim in an early morning shooting in Taylorsville.
Deputies were sent at 5:32 a.m. Wednesday to the 9400 block of Main Street in Taylorsville and found Justin Black with a bullet wound to the stomach, said Sheriff Matt Myers.
The sheriff said the shooting occurred outside, but declined to identify what type of gun was used.
Black was transported to an Indianapolis hospital via Lifeline helicopter after treatment by Columbus Regional Health emergency medical service personnel at the scene.
The suspected shooter, who has not yet been identified, was detained, Myers said.
Several streets around the shooting site were closed for the investigation, but Myers said there was no threat to the public.
Myers said he wanted the public, especially parents of students at Taylorsville Elementary School, to know that the sheriff’s department was in contact with school resource officers and school officials during the incident to make sure they were kept informed and knew that it was safe for students to come to school Wednesday morning.
“This call came in at 5:32 a.m. and deputies were on scene at 5:39 a.m.,” Myers said. “Within minutes, the scene was secured and the victim was receiving aid.”
Sheriff deputies secured the weapon involved in the incident and said the suspect is cooperating with law enforcement officers.
“I want to commend BCSO Sgt. Jarod Aspenson, who was first to arrive, who did an excellent job getting this situation under control, getting aid for the victim and getting the scene secured, Myers said.
