COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus police officers arrested a local woman on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated after she was reportedly involved in a vehicle accident and fled the scene of the crash.
At approximately 1:45 a.m. Friday, CPD officers responded to the area of 10th Street and North National Road (U.S. 31) in regards to a vehicle accident where both vehicles had left the crash scene, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.
Deputies from the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department located one of the crashed vehicles, a silver colored sport utility vehicle, and stopped it on 10th Street. CPD officers assisted on the traffic stop and determined that a passenger in the vehicle, Brittney A. Spears, 23, of Columbus, was operating the vehicle when the crash occurred, Harris said.
Officers administered field sobriety exercises to Spears and she later submitted a breath test sample of .108%. Spears was placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident and false informing.
